🏞️ Discover Aguadilla, Puerto Rico
Aguadilla, located on the northwest coast of Puerto Rico, is a city rich in natural beauty. Known for its stunning beaches like Crash Boat, Survival Beach, and Peña Blanca, it offers crystal-clear waters and dramatic coastal cliffs that draw surfers, snorkelers, and sunset seekers alike. The lighthouse ruins in Punta Borinquen whisper stories of maritime history, standing watch over the Atlantic with quiet dignity. Nearby, the Rafael Hernández Airport connects travelers to this vibrant town, while local bakeries, plazas, and murals reflect the warmth and creativity of its people. Whether you're exploring hidden sea caves or savoring fresh empanadillas by the shore, Aguadilla invites you to slow down and feel the rhythm of the island.
🚗 Getting There
Aguadilla is easily accessible by car from San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. The drive takes about two hours via the PR-22 highway, offering scenic views along the northern coast. Travelers can also fly directly into Rafael Hernández Airport (BQN), located in Aguadilla itself, which provides a convenient gateway to the region. Public transportation options include buses and taxis, but renting a car it’s better for greater flexibility in exploring the area's beaches, lighthouse ruins, and coastal trails.
🌟 My Personal Observation
- Crash Boat: Crash Boat is one of the most popular beaches in the northwest area of Puerto Rico, easily reached from towns like Rincón, San Sebastián, Camuy, Hatillo, and Lares. This beach is visited year-round by locals and tourists looking to relax and enjoy a good time under the sun. Its name dates back to World War II, when the U.S. military used the area as a base for rescue boats — known as "crash boats" — that retrieved downed pilots from the ocean. The remnants of the old pier still stand today, now serving as a vibrant spot for fishing, snorkeling, and sunset photography. 📍 View on Google Maps
- Borinquen Point Lighthouse Ruins: The Borinquen Point Lighthouse was originally built in 1889 by the Spanish to guide ships through the treacherous Mona Passage. Severely damaged by the 1918 earthquake, the lighthouse was never restored, leaving behind hauntingly beautiful ruins that overlook the Atlantic. Today, the site is a favorite among photographers, history enthusiasts, and mountain bikers who explore the rugged coastal trails nearby. The surrounding area offers dramatic ocean views, sea breezes, and a quiet sense of reverence — a perfect stop for those seeking both adventure and reflection. 📍 View on Google Maps
-
Survival Beach Cave and Stairs: This hidden gem in Aguadilla requires a bit of effort to reach — you’ll hike
a shaded trail through coastal trees, starting near Surfer’s Beach. The path leads to a
dramatic shoreline dotted with massive rock formations and sea caves carved by time and
tide. The beach itself is secluded and serene, with golden sand and powerful waves that
make swimming risky but the views unforgettable. Tucked into the cliffs above, the
Survival Stairs are a relic from the Ramey Air Force Base era, once used for coastal
access. Though partially gated and weathered, they remain a quiet symbol of the area’s
layered history. This spot is beloved by hikers, photographers, and adventurers seeking
solitude and raw beauty.
