The Finding Spot

Ouray/Colorado

Discover Ouray, Colorado

Ouray, Colorado is a gem tucked deep in the San Juan Mountains — often called the “Switzerland of America” for its dramatic alpine scenery. If you're ever craving a mix of rugged adventure and small-town charm, this place delivers in spades. I've visited twice during the summer, and based on my experience, it's a quiet and peaceful town. I especially enjoyed walking its historic streets and exploring the surrounding trails and vistas.

🚗 Getting There

The drive from Denver to Ouray is approximately 6 hours, covering about 300 miles through some of Colorado’s most scenic terrain. I’m using Denver as the main reference point since most visitors fly into Denver International Airport (DEN) when coming to Colorado. From Denver, the route typically follows I-70 west to US-50, then south on US-550 — which includes the stunning Million Dollar Highway near the end.

🌟 My Personal Observation

  • Box Canyon: If you have the chance to visit Ouray, one of the places I highly recommend is Box Canyon. It's home to a powerful waterfall that plunges through a narrow quartzite gorge — the sound and force are incredible. The short walk into the canyon is easy and scenic, and there's also a high bridge trail that gives you sweeping views of Ouray and the surrounding peaks. The nature center offers info on local geology and wildlife, and if you're lucky, you might spot the rare Black Swifts nesting in the cliffs during summer. It's one of those spots that feels both dramatic and peaceful at the same time.

  • Lower Cascade: This is another spot you shouldn’t skip. If you're not afraid of heights and narrow paths, you can actually walk behind the waterfall and feel the spray and wind rush past your face — it’s exhilarating. The short trail to the falls is just 0.3 miles from the end of 8th Avenue in Ouray, and while it’s moderately steep, it’s accessible and well-marked. The waterfall itself drops over 300 feet into a rocky gorge, and the mist creates a refreshing, almost surreal atmosphere. There’s even a footbridge and a small shelter near the base, making it a great place to pause and take in the view.

🥾 Other Hidden Gems

  • Ouray Via Ferrata: A thrilling cliffside route with iron rungs and cables, carved into the Uncompahgre Gorge. Open May–October, with free access for experienced climbers or guided tours available. 📍 Route Info
  • Bear Creek Falls (Ouray): A dramatic roadside waterfall along the Million Dollar Highway, with steep canyon views and a roaring drop into Bear Creek. 📍 Scenic Stop
  • Ouray Hot Springs: Naturally heated, sulfur-free pools surrounded by mountain views—perfect for post-hike recovery or winter soaking. 📍 Soaking Options

🛏️ Places to Stay

  • St. Elmo Hotel: I stayed here on my second trip to Ouray. It’s a really old, well-conserved hotel with clean rooms and great service. Don’t expect luxury — this is a historical place, and they’ve intentionally preserved the original structure. If you want to feel and live the experience, it’s worth trying. I don’t regret the choice, but that’s my humble opinion.
  • Hotel Ouray: Boutique-style lodging with modern amenities, located right on Main Street.
  • Twin Peaks Lodge & Hot Springs: Comfortable rooms with access to hot springs and spa services.
  • Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs: Rustic charm with private outdoor soaking tubs and mountain views.
  • Beaumont Hotel & Spa: Elegant and historic, but more upscale than St. Elmo — ideal for those seeking luxury with heritage.
