The Finding Spot

Arecibo/Puerto Rico

🏞️ Discover Arecibo, Puerto Rico

Arecibo, located on the northern coast of Puerto Rico, is a city rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. Known for its stunning beaches, lush landscapes, and the famous Arecibo Observatory — which sadly collapsed in 2020 and is no longer operational — this destination offers a unique blend of attractions for travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation.

🚗 Getting There

Arecibo is easily accessible by car from San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. The drive takes about an hour via the PR-22 highway. Public transportation options include buses and taxis, but renting a car is recommended for greater flexibility in exploring the area.

🌟 My Personal Observation

  • Cueva del Indio: In Arecibo, you’ll find this dramatic coastal cave system known for its ancient petroglyphs and sweeping ocean views. The hike is relatively easy, but the entrance itself can be tricky — so tread carefully. The real reward? You don’t even need to enter the cave to enjoy it. The cliffside vantage point offers breathtaking scenery that’s worth the stop. 📍 View on Google Maps
  • Arecibo Lighthouse: The Arecibo Lighthouse and Historical Park offers sweeping views of the Atlantic, a small museum, and beautifully maintained gardens. You can explore the area's rich history and grab a bite at the on-site restaurant. I ate at Islote Beach Restaurant, tucked into the curve of the road — the food was fantastic. Just across from the lighthouse, there’s a small but stunning beach that’s perfect for a quick stop or sunset view. 📍 View on Google Maps
  • Windows Cave (Cueva Ventana): Located along PR‑10 at Km. 57 in Arecibo, near Utuado, this natural balcony frames the valley of the Río Grande de Arecibo. Once freely accessible, the cave is now managed by a private ecotourism company that offers guided tours to protect its fragile ecosystem and ensure safe access. The view from the “window” is breathtaking, stretching across cliffs, river, and forest. The area actually contains three caves, but Cueva Ventana is the most impressive — a dramatic opening that feels like a living postcard. Today, improved trails and facilities make it easier for visitors to enjoy the adventure while learning about the geology, wildlife, and Taíno heritage of the site. 📍 View on Google Maps

🥾 Other Hidden Gems

  • Driving Around Arecibo: Take a scenic drive through the town of Arecibo to admire its charming Catholic church, historic town square, and colonial-era architecture. Though small, the town offers a peaceful glimpse into Puerto Rican heritage. And since Puerto Rico is a compact island, it’s easy to explore nearby towns like Hatillo, Camuy, and Barceloneta — each with its own flavor and hidden gems.
